Golfing Legend

Taylor's Gold: Life and times of a golfing superstar (Royal North Devon Golf Club, 200 pages).

The acclaimed biography of JH Taylor, who rose from impoverished boy caddie to become five times winner of the Open Championship (and six times runner-up) - one of the Great Triumvirate who dominated the game in the years before 1914. Not only the definitive life but a vivid exploration of all aspects of golf in its founding period.

JH was also of course father of Buckhurst Hill's first headmaster of the same name, of whom there are several youthful pictures among the many contemporary photographs.

"Taylor's Gold surprises and delights from the first page to the last ... for me, this is one of the most enjoyable golf books I have read in a long time", Peter Dixon, The Times online.

Copies available from the author Jim Hopkins at £20.
